The War of Fear and Love Part 2: Programming

In review of the previous discussion on our solidarity, being members of Christ’s body, with its cohesiveness being one of an organic nature, what then shall we say about mechanical solidarity? If the successful function of our organic bond is solely dependent on the uniqueness and interdependence of each unit within, then mechanical solidarity is inherently based on the sameness and the identical function of the individual parts. Ironically, because all parts are completely identical with no individuality whatsoever, mechanical solidarity is a bond that constitutes ties that can easily be broken and forged (copied fraudulently) “even while it absorbs the carbon-copied unit into its group” (Braiterman 2018). Also, because you are one of many that are all alike, you are inherently expendable.

As we investigate further, the word “mechanical,” speaking of a person or action, is described as NOT having or showing THOUGHT or SPONTANEITY, it is automatic. Words used to describe a mechanical operation are machine-like, UNTHINKING, unemotional, UNCONSCIOUS, involuntary, instinctive, routine, habitual, inattentive, UNFEELING, IMPERSONAL, inhuman, lifeless, SOULLESS, UNINSPIRED, unanimated, casual, perfunctory, cursory, CARELESS, unimaginative, and NEGLIGENT. I certainly do not want any of these words to be the description of my faith. You are not required, nor is it profitable to the group for you to think freely in this sort of operation. Consider the words that are the opposite of mechanical… CONSCIOUS, CAREFUL, and AUTHENTIC. Does this type of functionality sound familiar to you?

“To everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-3 KJV)

Before we give the ideology of mechanical solidarity a completely bad reputation, there are groups in which this form of cohesion is productive and serves a good purpose. For example, within the organic solidarity of the human body, there lies massive armies of mechanical solidarity, such as red blood cells and white blood cells, which unite in its respective identical functions to replenish, nourish and restore its overall organic group. Mechanical solidarity describes the strategies used to train new soldiers joining the military. Also, through the worst of tragedies that have wounded America, we are suddenly united in mechanical solidarity by grief and trauma, which erases the lines that divide us by race, religion, political views, and social status, placing us all in a united and equal front as Americans.

The disadvantages of the mechanical solidarity ideology would be its vulnerability to any ploy that seeks to cause division and unfortunate susceptibility to being controlled, imprisoned, and exploited by cult leaders who prey on such blind conformity and compliance.
